A thermostat is a device, as its name suggests, designed for temperature control in the heating system.

The devices are divided according to two principles - management and characteristics.

The thermal head contains a cylinder with working fluid. In some devices it is replaced by gas.

Types of devices and how they work: features of temperature regulation

There are mechanical and electrical, liquid and gas-filled thermostats. Separation according to the first principle affects the control of the device, and on the second — on technical characteristics.

Mechanical

Not only alcohols and volatile substances are used as a working fluid, but also solids. The latter are more reliable, but have an effect after 30-40 minutes after changing the temperature.

It has a couple of significant disadvantages:

  • Complex setup.
  • High sensitivity to sunlight, wind and heat sources.

Attention! The latter factor greatly limits the number of places where installation is permitted.

Electrical

To change the temperature, the characteristics of the electrical circuit are used:

  • the resistor changes resistance, depending on the heating or cooling of the device;
  • constant voltage support affects current strength;
  • The fan works depending on this.

Although the current is small, the transistors act on the valves, controlling the supply of coolant. Electronic circuit works regardless of temperature variations.

The device is quite simple, but it allows you to regulate and control only small mechanisms. There are industrial devices that can control boilers up to several thousand watts.

Electric thermostats come in analog and digital. The first ones are simpler, easy to set up, and have only a couple of indicators built in. The second ones can be programmed for several days in advance.

Digital is also divided into two categories according to the logic of work:

  1. Closed ones are easy to customize, but have limited potential.
  2. Open ones are fully programmable, but require the involvement of a specialist.

The latter are usually used for industrial purposes, as they are more expensive and require less frequent monitoring by employees.

Reference! Thermostats can control gas or electric boilers, regardless of the size of the piping.

Liquid

The average response time of the device to temperature adjustment and change is 25 minutes. They are more widely used because a smaller diameter head is sufficient. Depending on the model, protection against temperature effects changes and measurement error.

Among the three types of mechanical thermostats is the bestIt reacts faster to changes, although it has a slightly larger margin of error.

The rod movement time is 7-9 minutes, which is three times less than that of liquid.

This feature is caused by the structure of the device. The capsule with compressed gas is installed at the maximum distance from the walls. No interaction with external factors increases sensitivity and the speed of the regulator.

The device is easy to use. In mechanical it is enough to indicate the temperature heat that must be maintained. For maintenance, check the wear of components every six months. Electrical components must be carefully to program, and the performance is monitored constantly.
