Drive heat through pipes! Centrifugal pump for heating and other types of circulation devices
A circulation (recirculation) pump is an element of the heating system, which is a device with pumping and suction functions.
It is mounted in the heating system pipeline and ensures uniform heat distribution in the room.
What types of household circulation pumps are there: centrifugal, inertial, forced
There are pumps centrifugal, They move liquid using centrifugal force.
The unit can also operate using inertial forces, which arise under the influence of oscillatory processes in the pumped liquid.
Such devices are called inertial. Forced aggregates provide forced movement of liquid along a closed circuit.
The devices contain the following elements:
- A body with a snail to which the circuit pipes are screwed.
- Electric motor.
- Rotor with impeller.
Depending on whether the rotor comes into contact with the heating system fluid, they are divided into units with dry and wet rotors.
With wet rotor
Wet rotor circulation devices are installed in short pipelines. The rotor is located in water, which cools the engine and lubricates the parts.
These units have the following advantages:
- do not create noise during operation;
- the rotation speed has a stepless switching;
- reliable in operation;
- they are easy to set up and operate;
- do not require maintenance;
- consume little electricity;
- have small weight and dimensions.

Among the disadvantages, we can note low power of the devices. Therefore, they are not suitable for industrial needs. But for private heating systems, this is the best option.
Such devices can only work with unpolluted water, so it is better to install at the entrance to the system mud filter.
Electric with dry rotor
In heating systems for large spaces, I use dry-rotor circulation devices. The devices have an electric motor and a working part of the rotor separated by sealing rings. The rotor does not contact the coolant. It is cooled by a fan, so it creates noise during operation.
Advantages of dry rotary devices:
- high coefficient of performance (COP);
- do not depend on the quality of the energy source.
The disadvantages include:
- high noise level;
- the need for frequent replacement of sealing rings.
Because of the noise It is better to install it in a separate room.

There are two types of dry rotor machines:
- vertical (the motor is located vertically, the outlet and inlet pipes are on the same axis);
- console (have axial input and radial output; the electric motor has mounting units).
Dry-rotor devices are installed in heating networks when it is necessary to create high pressure of the pumped liquid.
Network types of devices
In centralized networks of cities and large microdistricts, high-power devices are used - network pumps. They are capable of pumping water of high temperature - over 180 °C. But these units can only work with clean water, in which the concentration of mechanical particles is minimal.
The devices are made from materials that are resistant to corrosion and high temperatures. cast iron or steel 40, 45. They have a simple design. The shaft is horizontal, the pipes are in the lower part of the body, so disassembling the device is possible without dismantling.
How to choose a pump recirculation device for heating?
Selecting a unit depends on the parameters of the heating system.
Matching pump characteristics to heating system parameters will ensure efficiency and cost effectiveness of work.
When choosing a device, the following parameters are taken into account:
- performance;
- pressure (can be within the range 4-12 meters);
- dimensions;
- noise generated;
- ease of care and maintenance.
Attention! You shouldn't buy cheap Chinese units, as it's impossible to guess their service life. It's better to give preference to devices whose price is in the mid range.
