How nice it is to relax outside the city on weekends surrounded by friends and family! During such leisure time people like to cook on hot coals dishes made from fish, meat, fruit or vegetables.

Of course, it’s easier to make a barbecue or dig a hole in the ground and use crossbars for the net and skewers.

But the quality and taste of food improves, and less fuel is consumed if food is cooked on special structures.

One of them is a barbecue. Such a device is also sold in stores, but if the owner of a country house has skills in construction and metalworking, he will be able to make your own barbecue.

What is barbecue?

In addition to barbecue, fire is used to cook food. barbecue and grillThe difference between them is not that big, but it still exists:

Barbecue most often made of bricks or metal. This is a vessel for coals, on which skewers are placed or a grate with products is installed. Height of the device not regulated. The stand is the upper level of the grill. Air flows freely around the products being prepared.

The box has several holes for air penetration. This allows the wood to burn to smoldering coals. This is how heat is generated, which is transmitted through direct thermal radiation. It is involved in cooking. Mangal - the simplest device for cooking over a fire.

Grill It is also intended for cooking food on coals: the meat is strung on skewers or laid out on the grid over the coalsThen the device is closed with a lid.

B-B-Q — something between a barbecue and a grill. This device is closest to those on which barbarians cooked meat. A device for cooking food — a type of hearth with one open front sideThere are barbecues in which a wall (side) is installed around the perimeter of the grill, preventing the heat from escaping to the sides from the slightest gust of wind.

The wall is also subject to heating. and takes part in cooking. A heat cushion is created, enveloping the products from different sides: from below, from the left, from the right, and in hearth-type structures - also from above. This leads to faster preparation of the dish.

Risk overdrying or overburning in a barbecue less than when cooking on a grill. Usually all barbecues are created with the possibility adjust the height of the grill over coals. Barbecue is also distinguished by the fact that it uses coal as a source of energy. gas and electricity (in some models), not just firewood.

Reference. There is no consensus on the origin of the word "barbecue". The most reliable explanation is that it is linked to the ancient Greek "barbarous", which later migrated to Latin.

The word "barbarous" referred to foreigners, newcomers. In Russian, it eventually became "barbarian". Representatives of cultures alien to the Greeks and Romans cooked food in the hearth and on a fire.

What can it be made of?

Material is one of the key factors to consider when creating a barbecue. Brick allows keep the heat for a long time, save fuel and achieve simmering of dishes without using very high temperatures. Metal has a lower heat capacity, but the brazier will cost less.

Besides, she easy to dismantleThe stone barbecue grill has high heat capacity, reliability, durability and a very attractive appearance.

Another material that barbecues are made from is concrete. With its help, structures of any shape are created. If porous elements are added to concrete, the barbecue oven will be light.

This eliminates the need for a strong foundation, but a brazier of this type requires an expensive fireproof composition.

Types of barbecues, their construction

There are several types of barbecues, differing in size, complexity of construction and materials from which the oven is made.

Standard layout

This is the simplest oven, for the creation of which no special skills in construction are required. For the device they use normal masonryThe height of the oven is thirteen rows (seven hundred and two millimeters)The length of the structure reaches one hundred eighty one centimeters, in width - ninety centimeters.

Advanced layout

This type of oven is equipped with with a stove and a cauldron. Knowledge is required for its construction. dutch masonry, in which it is possible not to make seams in rows. Such a furnace has the following dimensions (in centimeters): depth - 177.8, width - 43.4, height - 190. You can build a barbecue with a stove and a work area. Dimensions (in centimeters): 121 — into the depths, 224 — in width, 190 — in height.

Building a barbecue

To make a barbecue with your own hands, first of all you need to decide on the material. You can use metal or brick.

Metal stove

To create such a barbecue you may need: welding and metalworking. Although it is possible to do without a welding machine. For example, if you make portable model barbecue, very convenient for use not only in the yard of your home, but also in nature. It is easier to make a barbecue from unnecessary metal barrel.

Photo 2. Cooking on a metal barbecue. You can cook both meat and various vegetables.

It should not be corroded by rust, and flammable materials (kerosene, gasoline) should not have been stored in it. The barrel is marked using two parallel lines running from the bottom to the lid. It is cut off by a turbine third of the surface. The larger part is placed on metal legs. The second part is used to make a hinged lid.

Barbecue is also made from gas cylinder. You will need a container with a capacity of from fifty to one hundred liters and a height of one hundred and twenty centimeters. There is no single method for creating the design. The barbecue scheme depends on personal preferences. If charcoal and a grate are to be used, the cylinder is cut exactly in half. If skewers are to be used, the size of the cut-off upper part should be smaller than the base of the container.

Attention! The cylinder must be completely emptied of gas (otherwise it may explode while the turbine is running) and thoroughly washed.

Made of brick

First of all the foundation is being laid. It is made based on the dimensions of the barbecue oven. It is also taken into account whether the latter will be combined with a dining area or a gazebo.

A monolithic concrete slab is suitable as a foundation for a barbecue (5-7 centimeters thick). You can use a slab cake made of sand, crushed stone, a concrete base, a reinforcement frame and a main concrete slab.

After the foundation has dried, construction begins pedestal (for a stove with a woodpile) made of facing brick. Then - firebox made of fireclay bricks. The last ones are — chimney and facing structure.

AdviceTo correctly lay out the barbecue oven parts, use the order diagrams, which clearly show all the rows with the number and position of the bricks.

Purpose of different models: outdoor stove for a summer house, garden, yard

Brick barbecues are best used by those who live in a private house. Such a furnace is stationary, that is, it is impossible to move it. For such a barbecue, you can make a spit, a surface for cutting products, shelves for dishes and even a built-in sink.

Photo 3. Brick barbecue with an extended layout, which has space for cooking on coals and also for boiling various dishes.

The extended layout barbecue is used for cooking dishes on coals or on a cast iron plate with a holeThis way you can cook soups, heat water or cook potatoes.

Iron barbecue is easy to carry, convenient for use both in your yard and in the bosom of nature. Such a design compact, it can be easily placed in the trunk of a car. It is ideal for lovers of country recreation.

Which option should I choose?

In order to make a choice of barbecue, you need to consider a few points:

  1. Assumed frequency of use barbecue. If you will only cook a few times a season, then it is hardly worth creating an expensive stationary structure that will take up a lot of space.
  2. Fuel type (wood, gas or electric). Laying a gas pipeline will require a lot of approvals.
  3. Presence or absence of a personal plot.

Choosing the best garden barbecue option

When choosing a barbecue project, you need to consider: the purpose of the structure, the number of people constantly relaxing, your financial capabilities, the frequency and complexity of maintenance.

Important! You shouldn't connect the old and new foundations when building a barbecue. Otherwise, the soil will sink, and the new foundation will pull the old one down. Then cracks will start to appear, and they can destroy the entire structure..

How to set up a barbecue area?

To properly arrange the barbecue area, use simple and effective rules:

  1. Choose a suitable location. It is best to place the barbecue in the shade, in an area closed from prying eyes: near a pond, fountain, rose garden, alpine slide. Consider the prevailing direction of air flows. This will prevent smoke from getting on the table for the meal.
  2. Choose the right platform design. A glazed pavilion will allow you to use the barbecue even in rain and snow. The barbecue area can also be open, but then you will have to cook only in good weather.

Photo 6

  1. Decide on the type of fireplace: portable, stationary, tandoor, fireplace.
  2. Create a storage area for firewood and coal.
  3. Equip the area with the following accessories: work table, shelf for dishes and spices, storage space for skewers, nets and spits, poker, scoop, potholder.
  4. Choose comfortable furniture B-B-Q.
  5. Plant flowers near the barbecue, spices and garden herbs, beautiful shrubs and trees.
  6. Take care of the decorative area. Insert ceramic figures, beautiful stones into the uncured plaster, create a mosaic pattern. A convenient and original lighting system will also be a decoration.

Pros and Cons of a DIY BBQ Area

Not everyone can hire professionals to build a barbecue area. Do it yourself much cheaperIt is worth considering the advantages and disadvantages of building a barbecue.

Pros:

  • relaxing in the bosom of nature and making a fire at any time;
  • outdoor cooking;
  • ease of maintenance;
  • creation of decorative elements for your site.

Cons:

  • complexity of construction;
  • the importance of constantly checking compliance with fire safety regulations.

Fire safety rules

The oven is a potential fire hazard. The barbecue is no exception. Therefore, you need to carefully observe safety requirements:

Photo 7

  1. Distance of barbecue from wooden buildings.
  2. Absence of trees, grass and shrubs on the course two to three meters from the building.
  3. Soil cover The area around the barbecue must be made of non-flammable material.
  4. At a distance up to two meters Do not store flammable substances.
  5. Walls, roof, supports must be made of fire-safe material or treated with a heat-resistant compound.

Let's sum it up

If you have some unoccupied space on your property, create and implement a plan for a special area for cooking delicious dishes. Choose the barbecue project that suits you, buy the necessary materials, gather all the tools and start building.

It is better to make a barbecue from an old pipe or build it from stone, but this way it will take more time to build the structure. But you can also use a gas cylinder, but I would not advise it. Since it is not entirely safe to cut it. But the iron there has absorbed enough chemicals. Personally, I have a brick structure.

Thank you very much for such an informative article, but I would like to add a little.
    1) Most craftsmen underestimate the danger of using barrels of fuel and other chemicals. The fact is that pesticides penetrate deep into the metal and when it is heated further, the food becomes saturated with poison!!! And washing, heat treatment, nothing at all will help you with this, it will be better to find another material.
    2) Half of the success and convenience of your barbecue area is made up of accessories and other attributes. You can cope with this using this information https://thermo.washerhouse.com/en/stroitelstvo-svoimi-rukami/barbekyu/aksessuari/sdelat-svoimi-rukami.html
    3) For my home, I consider the multifunctionality of the recreation area to be the peak of ideality and practicality. A table and a barbecue were not enough for me (but of course I started small), and in the end I built a whole complex. It includes: a hot and cold smoking smokehouse, a barbecue, a grill, a brazier, and a niche for drying.
  3. Alexander
In general, the design of the place where your barbecue will be is also a creative process. For us, since the weather is rarely good, the best option is a covered gazebo, which, if desired, can be used almost all year round. It also looks good if, if the area allows, you can also put an open grill-barbecue in the middle, and do everything in the same style. Since we chose paving stones, I will probably still put a grill, also facing it with the same material. Although the area is not that big, I think it will allow you to do this without overloading the space too much.
  4. Sergey
I am generally a supporter of a stationary brick barbecue hearth, or even better, a combination with a grill and a large cauldron. This option is very convenient, as they say, for all occasions, especially when there is a large family and frequent visits from guests. It is best to place the fireplace in a gazebo, which can be used as a summer kitchen and outdoor dining room throughout the summer season.
  5. Alexander
By the way, a compact barbecue grill can be made from a car disk, of course, better than stamping. Depending on your needs, either from a passenger car or a truck. There are a minimum of alterations here, just attach a stand, up to what to make from reinforcement, or a leg corner, or find a suitable base on legs.
  6. Andrey
A brick barbecue is a very good option, the temperature is evenly distributed, and of course the brick does not cool down as quickly as metal, and the presence of a chimney will always provide traction.
  7. Andrey
And I made a barbecue from an old iron barrel and a net, that's all I needed for this. Well, of course I used a non-rusty barrel, but a used one. I came up with this design myself. It didn't take much time to make. And such a device can be quickly and conveniently moved around the yard, wherever it's convenient.
  8. Ivan
If you have 50-60 bricks on your plot, consider that you have a barbecue. Lay out a well of any shape: circle, oval, rectangle, square. Do not forget to leave two holes in the first row. The solution is not needed, disassemble after use. The grate according to the shape.
  9. Sergey
And I built a barbecue hearth out of bricks, fortunately there were three hundred left over from the construction of the house, so I put them to use. Under the hearth I made a niche for firewood, very convenient, and the firewood is always dry. I made the grate removable, which allows you to use the hearth for cooking shashlik by installing a metal grill instead of the grate.
  10. Alexander
By the way, for a small barbecue, in principle, as well as for a grill, you can take an old frame from a foot sewing machine, it seems to be created for such things. You can play around with it so that it will look no worse than the branded one.
  11. Alexander
If you have a lot of free time, you can consider my design option for decorating a barbecue oven. The oven itself is made of bricks, and large river stones (pebbles) are used for decoration. The main difficulty is to select them by shape and size. This material can still be collected for free on the banks of rivers.
    1. Alexander
You can use paving stones and ordinary glass with the same success, by the way, it looks great, no worse than tiles. You will get an intermediate option between the Middle Ages and high-tech. And in general, in terms of design, everything here depends only on your imagination.

Outdoor stoves can be of different systems and complexity. Their main task is to cook in the open air and, in fact, on fire. At home we have a brick stove and under a canopy. This is convenient because even in winter it is not a problem to light the stove. My father made the stove himself. We took the foundation seriously, considering that the soil is clayey, we had to dig about ten meters. The masonry is made of half a brick and inside, where the fire itself will burn, he laid out fireclay bricks. The peculiarity of the masonry was such that there should be a distance of about 5-10 mm between the outer and fireclay bricks. To go to the pipe, it was necessary to make a narrowing. The subtlety is that the back row should remain in place, that is, the pipe should go exactly along the back row, the front and two side ones are narrowed. In front, he narrowed it by half a brick, and on the side by one third. We also have a beautiful arch on the stove. My father simply cut a semicircle out of two boards with a jigsaw. Two boards to make it easier to sew them together. I pulled them together and stuffed regular plywood on top. The arch came out of this model. It is very important that the arch converges to one brick.
  13. Andrey
I personally made a barbecue out of brick without any unnecessary bells and whistles in my gazebo in the yard. I will say that it is easier than, for example, welding from metal. When you make it out of brick, even if something does not work out, you can always redo it or fix it. So for me, this is the best option.
  14. Alexander
A friend also made a barbecue from a barrel, but in a slightly different way. He had a tripod welded from reinforcement, he was about to throw it away, it was constantly lying under his feet. Then he took the barrel, cut it up, welded the bottom to the tripod, put the barrel ring on top, since he also cut off the top. It turned out to be something between a barbecue and a grill. When not needed, he does not close the second lid, he uses it as a grill, when he needs to cover it, he puts the second lid on top. Everything can be disassembled in a few seconds, and the useless thing has found a use.

I would choose a brick barbecue, build it thoroughly and make it not just a stove, but also an element of garden or yard decoration. It is necessary that the structure matches the style, and benches and a table should be installed around it. But it is worth remembering about safety, it is better to build not on the grass, but on a platform made of concrete or tiles.
    1. Alexander
Well, for such a barbecue, you need a professional to do the work. In this case, I was lucky, my neighbor is a wonderful mason, and in general, he is an expert in everything related to construction. He laid out his own retaining walls from paving stones, laid out the fence belt (bottom) in the same way, made a barbecue for himself and me. He is often called in to do everything related to fireplaces, barbecues, stoves. You can't take that away from him, he is a virtuoso.
    2. Alexander
That's how we did it, the barbecue is in the gazebo, now we've closed it, installed lighting there, it turned out pretty good. I hung antlers on the walls, the table is homemade, it looks good. True, we were late with the deadlines, but we'll test it in the spring. Although the guys have already used the barbecue itself, they celebrated someone's birthday, they liked it. About 10 people fit in.
  16. Elena
In my opinion, it is not difficult to build a barbecue yourself. The main thing is to find a place. After all, in addition to a barbecue, you also need a place to sit. Therefore, if the plot is large, then it is possible. Unfortunately, we only have a seven-hundredth plot, and for everything. This is a house, a bathhouse, and the garden itself. Therefore, as such, the barbecue did not work out, only my husband still built a small barbecue himself, which he made of bricks
  17. Sergey Lashko
A barbecue grill, of course, can and should be made by everyone according to their needs, possibilities and desires. But for me, a mobile grill is the best.
When we gather for a barbecue, even if it happens at home, the women are busy with the table and we men gather (AROUND) the grill and while the meat is cooking we have a glass each and talk about our own. And how do we gather around a large stone grill? There are a lot of us in the family.
  18. Fedor
Homemade barbecue, works well from a metal barrel. Cut the barrel, removing 2/3. Weld 3-4 legs from the corners. Make a grate from masonry mesh. Cut out the bottom and weld a thicker grate. The fire is made on the ground. Not very aesthetic, but it will cost very little.
  19. Igor
On eight hundred square meters of my dacha I managed to build a barbecue grill. First I concreted a two by three square area. I laid out a grill from red brick, and next to it, in continuation to the grill, I installed a cauldron with a lid, lining it with bricks. Cheap and cheerful. There is no architecture, but it is always at hand.
  20. Ivan
Building a brick barbecue certainly makes sense if you live permanently in a country house. For occasional trips to the country, a metal barbecue will do. I personally made it myself from improvised means and grill meat on charcoal. I don't understand the enthusiasm for using gas, what's the point of shashlik if the meat doesn't smell of smoke and wood.
    1. Alexander
When going out into nature, in principle, it is not necessary to carry a portable barbecue with you, you can make an improvised one from improvised materials in a few minutes. Just a home, stationary one, it has wider functions.
  21. Alexander
Still, it is best to make a barbecue out of brick, it is more versatile. A neighbor made exactly that out of brick. He thought for a long time where to get fireproof bricks for the vault. Luckily, there is an old regimental bathhouse nearby, and the stove has perfectly preserved fireproof bricks, which are perfect for this purpose.
  22. LulaPilula
Since we don't go to the dacha very often, we decided to make a compact mobile barbecue. Based on negative reviews about metal barrels, we chose a thick-walled pipe of large diameter, it turned out great. In good weather, we cook outdoors, and in precipitation, we move it to the gazebo. The structure has already served us for more than 6 years.
    1. Alexander
My simplest barbecue was made from a washing machine activator. It turned out light, stainless steel, mobile, compact. There was practically minimal alteration, it still lies idle. Occasionally I let my neighbors use it.
  23. Hope
In principle, you can make a barbecue from any available means. But of course, you should pay attention to the fact that the material does not melt at high temperatures. As already mentioned above, the barrel is made of thin metal (and if you scrape off the paint, the metal will also be scraped off. And as for the gas cylinder, before cooking on such a barbecue, you should wash and clean it well, otherwise there is a chance that the whole idea will fly off, in the literal sense of the word!
Personally, we have a brick barbecue. In my opinion, this is the best option. And the grill is excellent and of course, you don’t have to redo it every year.
  24. Sergey Germantsev
An old gas cylinder makes a great grill and barbecue, but I don't recommend making one from an old barrel, it's a waste of effort. The thing is that the metal of the barrel is usually too thin and will deform under the influence of temperature and burn out over time. I tested it on my own experience, it was enough for five preparations.
    1. Alexander
An old gas cylinder is of course not bad, but there is one but. There are craftsmen who do not even unscrew the neck before working with it. What comes out of this, so I think there is more than one video on the Internet, what consequences there are from such production. So, if you make a stationary one from metal at home, then it is really better to find a thick-walled pipe of a suitable diameter. The manufacturing process may increase, but there is a chance not to become a cripple, this is in the best case.
