Natural stone – a material with an excellent appearance and considerable strength. Various buildings and structures are built from it, and it is often used in decorative finishing and landscape design.

The particular popularity of this material in the construction of various utilitarian and decorative designs, such as fireplaces, stoves, hearths.

And it is natural stone that is often chosen as a building material by owners who have decided to add a reliable, durable barbecue to their garden plot.

Certainly, artificial stone is also suitable for such construction, but will most likely cost more.

What are the pros and cons of a stone barbecue in the garden

A stove made of stone has a number of advantages over a brick or metal one.

Photo 1. The owner of the site completes the construction of a stone barbecue oven on a pre-prepared foundation, which is also lined with stone.

First of all, it is worth mentioning durability, because natural stone is not afraid of most natural influences, so if laid correctly, the structure will serve for decades. In addition, it is difficult to imagine a more eco-friendly material. After all, the technology of its extraction does not imply any impacts that change the chemical or radiological properties of the stone, which cannot be said about brick, which has residual radioactivity from firing.

Finally, a structure made of natural stone (as well as finishing an existing barbecue with stone) has aesthetic appearance and fits perfectly into the landscape.

In any case, it should be taken into account that all stone buildings have certain disadvantages. These include considerable weight and expensive services for their construction. But if nothing can be done about the first disadvantage, then an excellent opportunity to save on hired specialists will be to build a barbecue from artificial stone with your own hands.

Choosing a stone gazebo project with barbecue: photos and recommendations

Of course, only specialists with all the necessary tools and serious skills of a stonemason can build a structure from unprocessed natural stone. For those who are not specialists in this matter, a project that involves the use of polished standard blocks made of natural stone and concrete countertopThis is a relatively simple structure, but due to the use of natural materials it will not look primitive.

Photo 2. Computer design of a relatively simple stone barbecue.

To make things even easier, initially choose a project that does not include labor-intensive tasks. For example, a good choice would be a drawing with one simple niche for a barbecue, the chimney of which will be a hole in the upper part of the back wall. Such a design can be supplemented with a tabletop and niches for storing firewood and utensils. In addition to simplicity, the advantage of such a design is its versatility. In the niche of the hearth, you can place skewers, a grill grate, and hang a cauldron for cooking liquid dishes over an open fire.

Well, the cheapest and easiest option is stone cladding. This option involves the decorative use of natural stone. But you need to understand that, while not inferior in aesthetic qualities to barbecue ovens made entirely of stone, a structure that is only decorated with stone finishing will not be particularly strong and durable.

Of course, you can, on the contrary, choose a more complex version of a stone barbecue - with two fireplaces, one of which is intended for installation hob, with a high double chimney and other architectural delights. However, the construction of such a stove will be much more difficult and significantly more expensive. It is more advisable to choose the simplest option for the first experience of such construction.

Attention! The described barbecue design implies its installation as one of the walls of a summer kitchen or gazebo, or under a canopy.

Necessary tools and materials

All necessary materials and tools should be collected before the start of construction. This will allow you to carry out work without being distracted by searching for and purchasing any small items.

In addition, purchasing everything at once will help you better control your own costs according to the estimate and adjust the project if necessary.

So, the toolkit includes two shovels for earthworks - scoop and bayonet, mallet And trowel. In addition to carpentry, you will also need a regular hammer And hacksaw for metal. The following tools must be prepared: level, preferably with the possibility of mounting on a vertical surface, and roulette with markings.

We have decided on the tool, now we need to go through the list of materials that will be needed when building a barbecue from natural stone. And this list includes:

  • polished stone 20x20,
  • masonry mixture high temperature,
  • cement mixture,
  • sand,
  • waterproofing,
  • reinforcement or thick wire,
  • steel rod,
  • gravel for filling,
  • plywood,
  • metal accessories - grate, hook.

After preparing everything necessary and studying the project, you can begin construction work.

Attention! Instead of a hacksaw, it is also advisable to use a grinder, but the amount of metal work in the project is minimal and allows for manual labor.

Let's start construction

With a full set of tools and a good project of a stone barbecue, its construction will go smoothly and with pleasure. But it is also important how well the place for the construction of the future structure is chosen. This factor will also affect the convenience of further operation of the constructed object. Therefore, we advise you to check again whether you have designated a suitable area of your garden for installing a barbecue.

Of course, you can't just place a barbecue stove anywhere. You should follow fire safety rules and not build anything closer than 50 cm from the house. You cannot place the barbecue under trees, power lines, or ceilings - this may cause a fire.

The best option would be to place such a stove under a canopy or in a gazebo, but here too it is necessary to follow certain rules. There should be no wiring, lighting fixtures or flammable materials above the fireplace. It is better for the structure to play the role of one of the walls. This will save space and avoid smoke filling the gazebo space when using the fireplace. Placing it in the middle of the room or canopy requires the installation of an exhaust hood to effectively remove combustion products.

Are you sure that the chosen location complies with fire safety regulations and your personal needs? Now you can confidently begin the step-by-step construction process.

Step one - foundation

Since stone is a very heavy material, a pile foundation will not be enough. You will have to lay capital foundation, which requires a lot of time and effort, but provides a fairly strong foundation for the future structure.

To create such a foundation, a hole is dug 0.2-0.35 meters deep, by area 10 cm more, than the base of the future furnace. The pit is lined with geotextile or other waterproofing material. A layer of gravel, carefully compacted.

When compacted, the thickness of the backfill should be not less than 10 cm. Next, it is laid out on the substrate. reinforcement material.

The stone is laid on the resulting base, but not in a continuous row, but so that there is a gap between them. not less than 10 centimeters. These gaps are carefully filled with a solution of cement and sand. After completing this stage, it is necessary to wait for the solution to dry.

Attention! The foundation must dry and settle, otherwise it may shrink after laying.

Laying the walls of the barbecue

The next stage is the construction of the walls of the future barbecue. First, the foundation is built. The masonry is carried out in three rows of stones, and in order to save money, it is permissible to use a regular solution.

The base is constructed in the shape of a double U, thus creating two identical square niches at the very bottom of the stove.

The next step depends on whether you are using a pre-made concrete countertop or whether you need to make this element yourself.

In the second case, formwork is made according to the dimensions of the tabletop, reinforcement tied with wire is inserted into it, then filled with mortar. The mortar is best prepared using heat-resistant components.

After the slab has hardened and settled, it is carefully laid on the base. It is necessary to use a level, carefully ensuring that the countertop is laid strictly horizontally. If the level shows a deviation, more mortar is placed under one side of the slab.

Important! A concrete countertop will require certain external work in the future. This can be avoided by choosing natural or artificial stone as the material for the slab.

The crucial moment: the firebox

The laying of the firebox begins only after the slab has settled.

It is advisable to lay out the brazier in three rows of stones. However, you can make the structure higher by adding one row. In this case, cooking in the fireplace will be slower and more even, but the barbecue oven itself will be higher, so it will not be very convenient for people of short stature to use it.

In the upper seam, pieces of steel rod, previously cut with a hacksaw or grinder, are fixed. They will serve as the basis for installing the grate.

Next, a plywood base is made for the arch, which is installed in the firebox. A hole is made in the middle of the plywood for the hook. The mortar is laid on the plywood base, and the stone is laid on top of it. The structure is fastened at the top reinforcement from construction mesh and metal rods, from below, a base for the hook is inserted into the gap between the masonry through a hole made in the plywood in advance.

After the solution has completely dried, the plywood base is carefully removed, and then the reinforcing structure is disassembled. Then the back wall of the fireplace is laid out. It is also better to fasten the stone of the back wall heat-resistant solution. Between the vault of the arch and the top row of stones of the wall, a free space is left - through it the smoke from the hearth will escape.

After the solution has dried and the metal elements have been installed - hooks, gratings, etc. - the structure is dried.

Of course, a barbecue made of stones or lined with natural stones looks quite solid and beautiful. Especially if the creator managed to organically fit his design into the surrounding landscape.
But in any case, it is best to lay the firebox out of fire-resistant fireclay bricks. This will make it much more durable.

Victor, I agree with you. I built the barbecue from brick, which is suitable for high temperatures, otherwise there is simply no point, since from ordinary brick or stone - the oven or barbecue will not last long. But externally you can cover it with decorative stone, make a unique cladding. But necessarily on clay mortar, so that nothing crumbles.
  2. Ilya
I made a custom stone barbecue. Previously, I only made bricks, and this was the first time I encountered stone. I can say that the analogy is almost the same, the main thing here is to do the project itself correctly, so that the barbecue looks beautiful in its design. The work took about a month, since it was really the first time and the size was large.
