How to Build a DIY Brick Stove BBQ
Barbecue - barbecue oven, which is usually made of brick or stone.
Such structures come in the form of fireplaces and barbecues, equipped with a hob and a stationary hanger for a cauldron.
Barbecue ovens with a stove fit perfectly into the interior of a large cozy gazebo located in the yard of the house, and allow you to cook a huge number of different dishes over an open fire.
Wide range of additional accessories (eg. smokehouse) make barbecue grills practically universal devices.

Building a barbecue oven with a brick stove with your own hands
When making a barbecue with a stove, they use regular and fireproof building materials, cement of various grades, clay and fireproof mixtures based on it. We suggest considering this process step by step.
Project and costs. Why do you need a barbecue with a cooktop
Construction of barbecue ovens with a stove begins with drawing - developed independently or selected from a fairly large number of sources on the Internet.
If you have no experience, it is recommended to take the easier route and choose a ready-made project.
However, it may also have to be changed to suit specific conditions - reduced/increased, minor details added or removed.
Advice! The best option would be to choose a standard project. barbecue with side cooking surface.
This is not the simplest option, but with a slight complication compared to the classic one, this design is much more practical, as it allows cooking not only directly over the fire, but also in ordinary pots placed on the hob.
Basically, two types of projects are used, differing in the presence or absence of an additional chimney. In a more complex version, both the hearth and the firebox of the cooking part have separate chimneys. However, such a product requires more costs, so the optimal option would be to manufacture a version with one common chimney.
Single-flue outdoor stoves are made symmetrical and asymmetrical. In the first case, the cooking surface is located to the right of the fireplace, and to the left is a decorative surface used as a cutting table. If you need to save space or material, it is better to choose an asymmetrical option.
Whatever project you choose, it would be great if it comes with masonry order scheme barbecue ovens with a stove. In the future, the order of the barbecue can greatly simplify the work.
Materials required for construction:
- Building brick — 1500 units
- Fireproof brick — 400 pieces. Will be used to make firebox cavities where open flames are in constant contact with the walls.
- Cement, suitable for outdoor use
- Special bonding mixture - based on clay or modern fire-resistant ingredients.
- Metallic hob, door, grate and additional metal accessories.
- Steel wire, reinforcement, corners
- Boards for the frame
- Crushed stone
- roofing felt for waterproofing
Tools required for construction:
Photo 1. Household concrete mixer on wheels and a construction wheelbarrow. A small concrete mixer is necessary when preparing a foundation for a brick or stone barbecue.
- two shovels - scoop and bayonet,
- concrete mixer or a container for preparing the solution,
- trowel,
- cutter,
- roulette,
- level.
If you have all of the above, you can begin the first stage of construction.
Important! The choice of quality bricks affects not only durability. A barbecue made of good material has an aesthetic appearance even without additional finishing, which ultimately reduces construction costs.
Foundation for the construction of barbecue ovens with a stove
This stage of construction determines the success of the entire event, so the attitude towards laying the foundation should be the most serious.
First, a hole is dug 1.5x3 meters, depth of 60-70 cm.
The bottom of the pit is laid with a layer of sand and carefully compacted. The thickness of the compacted layer should be not less than 10 centimetersThe bottom is lined with roofing felt on top for waterproofing.
The foundation is reinforced with boards around the perimeter, and the area where the slab will be placed is also separated.
Next, it is prepared cement mixture, into which crushed stone is introduced. The hole is filled with the resulting mixture so that the base of the structure protrudes slightly above the surface. After this, the solution must be left for a time sufficient for it to dry completely and the foundation to settle.
Important! If the estimated weight of the stove does not exceed 500 kg, it is not necessary to have a foundation under the entire structure. It is enough to make it only along the perimeter. In this case, the screed is reinforced with reinforcement or thick wire.
Pedestal and firebox. And again the row-by-row scheme of laying a barbecue oven with a stove
If the option chosen for fastening the stove masonry is clay mixture, first we prepare it.
The clay is filled with water and left for 5-7 days, after which it is mixed. After this, sand and cement are added to the clay. Cement is added no more than 5% of the total mass of the mixture. The solution is thoroughly mixed, after which it is ready for laying out.
The pedestal is made of ordinary bricks, its height is not less than 0.7 meters. In the middle, you can make a niche-woodpile - this is not only convenient, but also allows you to save material. Next, the stove and firebox are laid out. This is where the order of the barbecue with a hob can be indispensable, that is, detailed step-by-step instructions on the order in which the bricks are laid.

Furnace width - 6 bricks, depth - at least three. First, they make a fireclay refractory masonry, and then a facing one on top of it. The refractory masonry is fastened with metal corners or reinforcement. This part of the work is completed by making a reinforcement floor.
Attention! If ready-made refractory mixtures are used, no additional ingredients need to be added - this may worsen the properties of the material.
Barbecue
Directly above the firebox is a grill. This oriental-type grill is used to cook shashlik, lula kebab and even lavash.
The barbecue can be built from ordinary bricks, protecting it from destruction with the help of an installation fireproof linings made of basalt cardboard, which have excellent thermal insulation properties. This solution will make the complex with a barbecue aesthetically attractive. Another metal sheet can also be placed here - for cooking liquid food in a cauldron with direct contact with fire.
The thickness of the grill should not be less 10 millimeters, a circle is cut out in the middle to fit the size of the cauldron.
Pipe and cooking section
Next, a refractory building is erected pipe — a regular straight line, with a "tooth" to improve traction. The specifics of using the design do not provide for the presence of a branched system of moves: there is only one side branch.
Brewing department is built in the same way as a fireplace - with a base made of facing brick and a firebox made of refractory. The same material is used to lay out the exhaust part, supplied to the side branch of the main pipe.
A special valve may be provided here, which closes the passage if the cooking part is not in use.
Next, the metal parts are installed: the cooking surface, the stove door, and the dampers.
Important! The fireclay must be laid on its edge, otherwise the firebox will not be spacious enough.
Important little things. Additional equipment and improvements.
If the barbecue oven was attached to a permanent gazebo or summer kitchen, all that remains is to properly dry the mortar, preventing cracking. To do this, some time after laying, when it settles, a small fire is lit in the fireboxes, and the combustion is maintained for a fairly long time. This procedure must be repeated two or three times, after which the structure can be used for its intended purpose.
But it is often necessary to improve the space around the stove. There are two options here - arranging a site that is protected from precipitation by a light canopy only over the table area, or building a more monumental structure. In the first case, you can even use ready-made canopies - kits sold in some stores.
Photo 3. The brick barbecue structure is hidden under a canopy. The roof will protect the cook from direct sunlight and drizzling rain.
The second case (for example, a large complex with a barbecue and a smoking stove) will require much more material and effort. They are installed and secured in the ground by concreting the support. Then a frame roof is erected, covered metal-plastic profile - it is lighter and more durable than traditional slate.
The barbecue pipe is led out through the roof, and a sufficient layer of thermal insulation must be placed at the point of exit. After this, lighting is carried out - necessarily in compliance with all safety regulations, and the line must be equipped with its own circuit breaker.
Carefully! Lighting fixtures must not be heated by the air flow.
At the edges or in the center?
The structure itself is traditionally located either in the center of the canopy, or in the corner, or playing the role of one of the walls of the building.
Photo 4. A complex brick barbecue complex with a hob in the center, a stove, a grill and several niches. The convenient corner location in the gazebo leaves a lot of free space, and makes the cooking process convenient.
Centered location — the most traditional option, reminiscent of the times when the stove was not placed in the house, but the house was built around it. However, in this option it is quite difficult to place a table and a cutting surface inside.
BBQ in the corner allows for significant space savings, but requires construction according to drawings that provide for a corner location of the stove.
Therefore, it is most optimal to place it as one of the walls of the gazebo - in this case, there will be space for a table, and it will be more convenient to cook, and load the stove with fuel.
Fire safety
The location of the barbecue stove should not only be convenient and fit well into the landscape, but also comply with safety regulations. There should be no trees, power lines or other obstacles above the structure. The foundation should not touch the foundation of the house. — a minimum of half a meter of distance must be left between them. It is also prohibited to have outbuildings, playgrounds, etc. in the immediate vicinity.
It is not allowed to use two types of heating in one design - solid fuel And gas cylinder equipmentThe distance between the firebox door and the gas source must be at least two meters, so installing a gas burner in a gazebo with a fireplace is a violation that can lead to serious consequences.
Important! The distance from the grill to the firebox should be at least 30 centimeters, this will help protect against burns when handling the grill and cauldron.
