Building a simple brick barbecue with your own hands. Step-by-step instructions with photos
A brick barbecue grill is a permanent structure where barbecue, vegetables, fish and other food are cooked outdoors. Cooking occurs using hot smoke and heat from an open fire.
Unlike collapsible metal structures, A brick barbecue is a solid structure that can be used for years. It can serve as an alternative to a stove and a smokehouse. In a country house, it can also be an original decoration of the territory.
We will tell you how to build brick barbecues with your own hands (drawings, photos, row orders at the end of the article).

How to make a brick barbecue at your dacha
Have you decided to build an outdoor brick barbecue with your own hands? There are a huge number of photos of barbecue designs, diagrams, and layouts. How to choose the right option?
They happenhomemade barbecues made of brick with or without a roof. A garden barbecue without a roof is a brazier of varying heights.
A simple design that does not require much expense or effort to build, but it will not be possible to use the barbecue during rain.
The presence of a roof implies the presence of a chimney, which is covered with a canopy from precipitation. Such a barbecue resembles a fireplace in appearance.
Closed barbecues are solid outdoor structures, often equipped with additional elements. It could be grill grate, oven, cauldron. A barbecue with a place for a cauldron can be used for cooking pilaf or to heat food. If you remove the cauldron, you are left with a full-fledged brazier. If you close the opening for the cauldron with rings, you can put any dishes on them, like on a stove. The design can be supplemented niches for firewood, coals and utensils.
What elements will be included and how to make a country barbecue from bricks so that it suits you are determined at the design stage, based on the planned dimensions, how much food will be cooked in the barbecue simultaneously, and what types of food will be cooked on it.
Designing a brick barbecue
Ordering a build is an expensive pleasure, but With minimal masonry skills, you can easily build a brick barbecue with your own hands. What elements will be needed (cauldron, place for heating food, grill grate, smokehouse) - should be thought out in advance. There are many drawings. Below is an example of building a simple closed barbecue with a pipe.
ATTENTION! We strongly recommend that you approach the design seriously. Many summer residents build brick barbecues with their own hands, without using drawings. As a result, the structure at best turns into a flower bed. Since it is impossible to use a homemade brick barbecue for its intended purpose. Inconvenient.
When choosing or creating a project, you should proceed from the dimensions of the future building. They depend on plot sizeIt is worth remembering that the land occupied by the barbecue, will no longer be used for other purposesThe size of the firebox will depend on how much food will be cooked in the grill at the same time.
Brick barbecue projects: drawings, photos
Peculiarities: the length of the firebox should not exceed 1 m - this is enough for 8-10 skewers at a time. The width should be consistent with the length of a standard skewer - 47-62 cm. The height of the frying platform is ideally slightly above the waist of the person who will cook.
Since a stationary grill often becomes the central decorative element of the site, this should be taken into account when designing and choosing a location. Its reverse side looks like a solid brick wall, so it is advisable to position the structure so that it was not visible from the back side. Or provide for its decoration taking into account fire safety.
Choosing a place for a barbecue
A place for a barbecue is also a place for relaxation. No one wants to build a stationary barbecue from bricks with their own hands so that it is inconvenient to use. When choosing where to place it, it is necessary to take into account a number of points:
- proximity to the place of rest — not far from a gazebo, summer kitchen or canopy with benches and a table;
- level area, specially equipped;
- mandatory convenient approach, ideally several;
- proximity to a water source (often a water supply is connected to the barbecue and a sink is installed. In this case, you will have to drain the water from the system in the winter to avoid cracking of the pipes);
- protection from atmospheric precipitation (canopy), sometimes a barbecue and a rest area are arranged under one canopy;
- sufficient distance from trees, flower beds and garden beds — high temperatures will cause plants to wither and may die;
- sufficient distance from waste containers and toilets;
- wind direction (if it is constant, place the grill so that the smoke blows not towards the dwelling, but towards the vacant lot).
Important! The barbecue is a fire hazard. It should be placed in the garden far enough from the house, flammable wooden buildings, and the parking area.
Tools and materials
Before building a brick barbecue in the country, you need to use a ready-made or pre-designed project calculate it yourself required amount of materials.
This is necessary to avoid a shortage or, on the contrary, excessive remaining surplus. Based on the quantities of material calculated according to the project, an estimate is made.
The calculation is done so that the material is with a small reserve. The following tools are needed:
- shovel;
- trough or a concrete mixer;
- buckets for solution;
- trowel;
- level, plumb line;
- circular sawA.
- fireclay (furnace) brick, which can withstand temperature changes without cracking;
Consumables:
- foundation material (rubble stone, cement, sand, crushed stone, boards or smooth plywood for formwork);
- reinforcing mesh;
- sheet iron;
- metal gratings, latches, corners, doors.
If the barbecue is designed with niches and a work area, you will additionally need stone countertop. A mixture of clay and sand is usually used as a masonry mortar, at least for the firebox.
Cement mortar will quickly deteriorate and crack when exposed to high temperatures (can reach 1000 °C in the furnace) and temperature changes. Clay must be pre-treated soak for a few days. Clay and building mixtures containing it are available in construction stores.
Reference: fireproof material is required for lining the firebox, which is in direct contact with fire. In order to save money, ordinary bricks can be used to build the base and elements that are not exposed to open flames and high temperatures, including those left over from dismantling any structures, cleared of mortar residues.
Simple DIY brick barbecue: step-by-step instructions
As an example, step by step, in the format of "do it yourself", we will analyze how to build a barbecue with your own hands from bricks, the simplest option. The only complication that our simple barbecue from bricks will have (photo of the proposed option below) is a pipe. We consider pipe laying to be necessary in Russian conditions. Let's build! Below is the construction diagram.
Foundation for a barbecue
The first stage of construction is pouring the foundation. For this, a hole is dug to a depth of 30 cm and the size that is on 20-30 cm exceeds the size of the future structure. The walls and bottom are leveled and compacted. A cushion of sand and gravel is laid on the bottom. The layers are laid one by one, each subsequent one must be moistened and compacted. The thickness of the cushion is 15 cm.
Before pouring, formwork is installed, protruding above the ground by 10 cm. It is placed at the bottom of the pit. reinforcing mesh and is filled with cement mortar. At the final stage, the foundation should be leveled using level. Complete hardening of concrete occurs 3-4 weeks, i.e., before further construction one should wait 28 daysTo ensure uniform setting in hot, dry weather, the concrete surface should be periodically moistened.
Clay is diluted with sand in a ratio of 1:1. The consistency of the solution should be like thick sour cream. It should be easy to take with your hands, without spreading. If a small amount of clay solution with sand easily rolls into a rope with a diameter of 1 cm, without cracking, without spreading and without losing shape, then the quality of the solution is good.
While the foundation is hardening, you should take care of the clay solution in advance. Gthe line is soaked in water for a week and stir occasionally, adding water if necessary. Clay and clay mortar are sold in construction stores. We supply electricity still during pouring, before laying out the brick barbecue. We make the connections with our own hands.
Waterproofing is laid on a fully hardened foundation - polyethylene folded several times, a layer of roofing felt or other bitumen material. Country barbecues are built in compliance with standard bricklaying rules. It is recommended to water the brick a day before laying or dip it in water for 20-30 seconds immediately before laying. Then it will not absorb moisture from the clay, and the adhesion will be better.
Order by order: how to build a barbecue from bricks
Despite the fact that we are disassembling an easy-to-build outdoor brick barbecue, the brick laying order (diagram) is compiled in advance, taking into account the selected dimensions and configuration. It is most convenient to do this on a sheet of paper in a cage.
How to lay bricks? The easiest way to lay them is with each row offset by half a brick in relation to the previous one. The first two rows are laid out solid. The very first row is made of whole bricks, without halves.
The lower part of the barbecue is the base. The masonry pattern is from the corners to the center along pre-marked lines. Every 3 rows It is necessary to check the correctness of the installation using a level and a plumb line, and lay out a mesh for reinforcement.
The height of the plinth depends on the project. It may have one or more niches where firewood, coal and other utensils are stored. It is laid out in solid masonry.
The central part of the structure is the firebox. The base for the brazier in advance cast from concrete with reinforcement or laid out of brick. If the project calls for the construction of arches for the firebox and niches, circledTo distribute the bricks evenly, chips are inserted between them.
The gaps are approximately the same 1 cm. Only after the arch has been completely laid out is the space between the bricks moistened and filled with mortar. The laid arch is left to harden with the circle on a day or two.
If the grill will also be used as a barbecue, you should in advance be concerned about the possibility grate installations. A small ledge is left for it, or several projections, so that the grill can be placed at different levels. It is installed on reinforcement rods embedded in the walls of the grill.
Advice: If you leave small gaps between the bricks when laying the firebox, then when using the barbecue later, the combustion will be better due to the air penetrating into the cracks.
The brazier is placed on metal corners, which are attached to the masonry with pins. Keep this in mind when assembling a country barbecue made of bricks with your own hands (photo of a correctly folded firebox below).
Important! It is unacceptable for atmospheric precipitation to fall on unfinished brickwork. If it starts to rain, it must be carefully covered with polyethylene.
The last stage is the construction of the chimney. Its presence allows you to keep the heat in the grill longer and remove the smoke. For the chimney, the masonry continues to be laid out, gradually narrowing it upwards. This is done by shifting the bricks in the rows. The shift is made no more than one third of a brick - otherwise the structure may become unstable.
Peculiarity: The pipe is a heavy part and requires support columns for its installation.
If laying a brick chimney seems too complicated, you can install a metal one. After laying, you need to fire the walls of the firebox. To do this, light the wood in the hearth and increase the heat as much as possible.
The construction of the brazier, installation of the cauldron or tray are carried out at the final stage. After that, decoration is carried out. If there is a tabletop, it can be decorated with a slab of porcelain stonewareThe barbecue itself is lined plaster, decorative stone, facing tiles, etc.
We have considered how to make a barbecue from bricks yourself. A separate issue is protecting the structure from washing out the solution. The problem is solved by treating it with special compounds. This can be heat-resistant varnish, oil impregnation for stoves and fireplace masonry, silicone water repellent, in addition to protecting against the appearance of microorganisms in the masonry.
To ensure fire safety, the barbecue grill for the dacha is lined with paving slabs. In addition to fire protection, it will create a flat, comfortable area. There should be no flammable objects in the immediate vicinity of the barbecue. Only non-flammable, heat-resistant materials are chosen for decoration.
