Advantages and disadvantages

The undoubted advantage is that brick barbecues practically eternal. Once you build a stove like this, you will be able to use it for as long as you like. In addition, the possibility to brag brick oven-barbecue in front of your guests, will also not be superfluous. The problem with sudden rain can be solved by adding a canopy.

The roof will perfectly complement the brick barbecue oven (see photos of closed buildings at the end of the article). The disadvantages include the fact that the cost of such barbecues much more, than portable metal ones, and if built incorrectly, they may be completely useless.

Construction planning

Where will the stove with a barbecue made of bricks be located? We prepare the place with our own hands

Construction must be carried out in the open well ventilated area and away from flammable objects. It is also recommended to equip this place with some kind of shelter to protect the stove from bad weather. Additional convenience will be provided by a small alcove, in which guests could gather.

ATTENTION! Find out from your neighbors in advance whether the smoke from the stove will bother them. To do this, light a fire at the construction site and make sure that the smoke will not cause any inconvenience to anyone.

Design

Any barbecue starts with a project. If you do not have a technical education, it is better to order the planning from professional builders, or use one of our projects (see photos and row plans below). But you can also do the row plan yourself, following the basic rules:

  • combustion chamber build high four rows of masonry;
  • three rows of masonry on the grill;
  • fireplace - in six rows of masonry;
  • casing - three rows of masonry in height.

If you are not sure whether you can do the row layout yourself, it is better to turn to specialists for this matter. Incorrectly executed design can significantly worsen the quality of the stove.

Site preparation

If the construction site is not concreted or, for example, not lined with stone, then you will have to prepare the site under the barbecue. First of all, clear away any debris and remove the top layer of soil. The required area not less than three square meters.

REFERENCE! If the barbecue will not be located under a canopy, then it is advisable to build it not on clay, but on a cement mortar, adding salt to it in the ratio: 1 kilogram of salt per bucket of mortar.

Laying the foundation

The construction of a barbecue oven must begin with the installation of a foundation. The dimensions depend on the area of the building, and the depth on the density of the soil. The lower the density, the deeper the foundation is made. It is better to reinforce with steel pins or wire.

The width of the pit should be larger than the furnace itself 10 centimeters. Dig depth approximately 30 centimetersIf there is a lot of sand in the soil, then dig a shallow pit, and before pouring the foundation, you need to install the formwork.

If the soil is clayey, then you can pour concrete for the foundation immediately without preparation.

After installing the wooden formwork, fill the bottom with sand and gravel, compacting and watering the surface. Then fill with mortar.

Foundation through 10-15 days gain its strength, and then you can move on to masonry. But before that, it is better to provide the structure with waterproofing. For waterproofing For example, a sheet of roofing felt would be suitable.

Here, any other materials are used that will be able to retain heat inside the barbecue as well. Put a layer of brickwork on top and fill everything with cement. Now you can proceed to building the barbecue oven.

REFERENCE! If you live in a rainy area, it is better to use a brick platform instead of a pit. This will help reduce the impact of excess moisture on the stove.

After receiving the construction plan, or having completed it yourself, you need to proceed to building a brick barbecue with a stove. The construction should be carried out with due care and attention. Since incorrect and poor-quality construction can spoil the entire structure, and will cost you wasted time and money.

When laying bricks, help can come from wooden frame, which must be installed at the beginning, to obtain uniform walls of the barbecue. It is advisable to use clay in the mortar for laying. Instead of clay, you can use special dry mixes. Use a metal corner to cover the stove openings. If you decide to use old bricks for construction, do not forget about pre-cleaning from dried old cement.

The hearth is laid out from fireclay brick, due to its fire resistance. Walls and cladding can be made of ordinary ceramic brick. The mortar for the barbecue stove is made of cement, sand and clay. For the firebox, made of fireclay brick, a mortar without adding cement is used in the proportion: three parts sand to one part clay. It is advisable to lay bricks before laying soak in water. This will ensure a stronger bond.

Before starting construction, carefully calculate the location of the brickwork and make sure there is enough free space around it.

  1. Lay out the first two solid rows bricks in the shape of a rectangle or in the shape provided for in the layout. Not forgetting align the corners and remove excess mortar, so as not to spoil the appearance of the brazier. To ensure that the rows are even, use a plumb line.
  2. To the third level install the stove ash door.
  3. Fourth It is also laid out solidly.
  4. In the fifth row Close the ash door of the stove with a lock and install the grates.
  5. In the sixth Lay the bricks without gaps.
  6. In the seventh You can now install the firebox door.
  7. In the eighth and the ninth bricks should be laid in a continuous layer.
  8. From level ten Usually they have already started building the stove chimney.
  9. In the eleventh block the opening of the firebox door.
  10. In the twelfth already make a hob and a fireplace.
  11. From the fourteenth row proceed to the construction of the chimney channel and construct the side walls of the brazier and the back wall.
  12. From twenty-first to twenty-third is being created semicircular hearth coverHere, to give the brick the correct shape, it you'll have to cut it with a grinder.
  13. From twenty-fourth to thirty-first The bricks must be laid in a continuous layer.
  14. Somewhere on the twenty sixth bring out the smoke channel in a row.
  15. Already at level thirty-two you can install a pipe. The cap over the pipe is usually made of the same materials from which the stove was built.

For greater comfort in using the barbecue, you should take into account some of the nuances of its construction. For example, When calculating the width of the grill, you need to take into account the length of the skewers.

PECULIARITIES! When heated, metal tends to expand, so remember to leave a small gap when installing the metal door. The height of the oven should match your height for greater convenience when working with it.

Fire safety

Don't forget that the grill is extremely fire hazardous structures. Failure to comply with safety precautions during careless use of the brazier can lead to tragic consequences.

Explosive objects must not be left nearby. Construction must not be carried out near wooden objects, trees. Canopies or other shelters should be installed with caution to prevent the possibility of them catching fire.

Important!Under no circumstances should flammable materials be placed on or near a working stove.

Knowing and using the most important safety principles will eliminate the possibility of unexpected results.

Ordering such a stove with a barbecue is not a cheap pleasure, especially if it is under a roof. It is quite difficult to make it yourself if you do not have any hands, since you need to know how to properly lay out the blower, chimney, arch and firebox vault. But if you do everything correctly, the result will please you for many years. Although I only built the stove, and made a separate frame for the shashlik.
    1. Ilya
Nikolay, that's why I made a small brick barbecue and a separate grill separately. Otherwise, I simply wouldn't have managed. The best option is to make everything separately, but put it together.
It's more economical and simpler, anyone can definitely handle it! No need to invent anything with pipes and blowing. I think you did the right thing by separately inventing a frame for shashlik.

The most important thing when building a stove with an oven is to find a working project, drawing and instructions. There are a lot of projects, but the oven does not work effectively. I tested the operation of the stove at all my friends, determined how well it bakes for them. And only after that I started building.
    1. Paul
Alexander, you are right. The choice of design with an oven should be approached with great responsibility. The design of such ovens should provide heating with oven gases of at least two opposite walls of the oven, and not just the bottom. And heating should be done by gases, and not by open flame.

I would like to warn those who decided to build a barbecue grill from bricks on their own. Not all clay is suitable for laying, and especially fire-resistant bricks.
Old stove-makers advise using only clay that has lain in a pile for at least a year.
I advise you to talk to old-timers and find out where they used to dig clay in your area for laying stoves.
    1. Ilya
Victor, I basically agree with you. But I haven't had good clay in my area for a long time. I have to buy it from neighboring villages. We are engaged in the construction of furnaces and we really need to be more careful with clay. You can also buy ready-made clay solutions that only need to be diluted with water. This is for those who do not have the opportunity to get clay.
